Op je achttiende denk je misschien 'Live fast, die young', op een bepaald moment zegt het leven 'ho maar'. Huis Perrekes in Oosterlo, Geel is niet de Pukkelpopweide. Griet Teck toont in haar documentaire Feel my love (2014) dat ook hier muziek in de lucht hangt. Vaak wordt er gekeken naar wat mensen met dementie niet meer kunnen. Met deze film wil ik tonen wat er wel mogelijk is. Ik wil de mensen achter de beperking tonen. Griet Teck. Een oudere vrouw wandelt door de tuin. Haar wereld is niet de onze. Al lijkt het zo wel. Deze documentaire slaagt er in ons dat op een filmische wijze duidelijk te maken. Zichtbaar maken wat niet zichtbaar is, is een mooi project voor een documentairemaker. Griet Teck nestelt zich voor haar film in het Huis Perrekes, een kleinschalig huis voor mensen met dementie. Ze wil zich zeker niet blind staren op de ziekte en registreert met de camera bijna 'en passant' het aftakelend geheugen van de inwoners. Hoe kan je met een machinerie die principieel alles opslaat wat zich voor de lens bevindt tegelijk 'voorbij' de ziekte kijken? Waar is mijn plaats in zo'n fragiele omgeving? Filmen wat er zich in deze hoofden afspeelt is geen eenvoudige opdracht. De regisseuse neemt haar tijd. De seizoenen glijden in elkaar over. In Feel my love, met zijn titel als een lied, kijkt ze naar hoe het licht in de woning valt. Tussen licht en donker. Hoe de zon door het plantengroen schijnt of de witte sneeuw oplicht. Hoe de al wat oudere huid rimpelt in het daglicht. Een vrouw wast de rug van een man. Lange witte haren worden geborsteld. In de keuken wordt er samen gekookt. Huis Perrekes is altijd in beweging. Al gaat alles er wat trager omdat die oude handen en knokige ledematen een ander, maar nog altijd eigen, ritme gevonden hebben. Griet Teck houdt zich aan dat tempo tussen opstaan en slapen gaan. Ze luistert naar de vaak fluisterende toon waarop gesproken wordt. En naar het musiceren op de piano in de muziekkamer. Ze kijkt naar dat vreemde ballet tussen personeel en bewoners. Naar het onophoudelijke aan- en uitkleden van pijnlijke ruggen en schouders en knieën. Hoe blijven die mensen overeind? Wat is het te leven tussen de herinneringen van zichzelf en van elkaar? Zo rusten en mijmeren in de nabijheid van de dood. En altijd weer is er de muziek. Nu eens is het Bach, dan de composities van Tuur Florizoone. Een klarinet of de eigen zang. Twee ogen zo blauw, al mijn geluk zijn die twee kijkers van jou horen we ergens in een scene. Voor ons zijn dat de ogen van Griet Teck die voor Feel my love de juiste afstand vonden om deze harde werkelijkheid onder onze aandacht te brengen.

Quality of life (QOL) research has made great strides since the social indicator movement started as a scientific enterprise in the 1960s. Following the lead of pioneers in North America and Europe, social scientists in other regions of the world have adopted and refined social data systems or barometers to monitor progress in enhancing the welfare and well-being of citizens. A distinctive feature of these barometers is that they measure both individual and societal quality of life. While not overlooking the more basic needs and material standards of living, the barometers also inform on issues of individual freedoms and choices and constraints on citizen empowerment that enhance and depress quality of life. Designed to capture nuances in local definitions of the good life, regional barometers are unique expressions of the obstacles facing different societies in their quest to achieve the good life.
